"Slasher School Musical" Takes Best Homage at the 2026 BloodBat Film Race

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Screaming Room is proud to announce that "Slasher School Musical," created by Matthew Torres under the team name TheStoryTimeGuy, has won the Best Homage award at the 2026 BloodBat 48-Hour Film Race, held as part of MidSummer Scream.

A gleefully unhinged spoof of the high-school-musical genre, "Slasher School Musical" blends spoofed showtunes, gloriously over-the-top gore, and a title sequence packed with gags from the very first frame. The result is a film that is as endearing as it is bloody — a reminder that horror and comedy have always belonged on the same stage.

The Best Homage award recognizes the film that most cleverly and lovingly pays tribute to the genres, tropes, and traditions that came before it. In transforming the wholesome song-and-dance formula into something with teeth, Torres delivered exactly that: a tribute that understands its source material well enough to lovingly tear it apart.

Torres is no stranger to the BloodBat stage. A content creator specializing in horror, folklore, and mythology, he took home the Most Creative Award at the 2025 BloodBat Film Race. His return in 2026 with a genre-bending musical spoof cements TheStoryTimeGuy as one of the race's most inventive recurring voices.

The BloodBat Film Race challenges teams to write, shoot, and edit a complete horror short in just 48 hours, working from a shared theme revealed at the start of the clock. This year's films spanned solo debuts, family productions, and seasoned creators, all racing the same two-day deadline.
